Gus watched different emotions played across Bex’s face. He’d told the truth. He didn’t know why he wanted to make her happy, he just did. It made him feel incredible when he was the one who’d caused her to smile. Her story had been sad. She’d been the victim of personal tragedy before she’d been born and he knew first hand what the loss of parents did, the loss of family, identity. He knew all that, so maybe that was why he wanted that smile lighting her face.
He couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to the shifter who’d raped her mother. Had he in fact taken the mayor’s son?
Gus had heard of rogue shifters in his travels. Bears who’d wandered away from dens. Wolves from packs. He’d heard of the matings between shifters not always working out and that there were matings with humans, although the consequences had been dire at times.
He’d never paid any of it much attention, but that was before meeting Bex. Now, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. What if she were his mate? What if she were the one meant for him? What if impregnating her, killed her?
Then again, she had some shifter in her. It wasn’t dominant. He hadn’t scented it in her arousal. If he hadn’t known about the rape of her mother, he wouldn’t have been able to tell she’d ever encountered shifter DNA. Even if inadvertently.
Still… He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a bear out there, or had been a bear out there that would know who Bex was. Maybe the lone bear was gone, and maybe not. He’d been looking for a savior and at first Gus didn’t know what that had meant, but his gut told him that yes, he did know what it meant.
Was taking her into the neutral territory smart? Was taking her over the Dragon a good idea?
The way she was looking at him in that moment, all rosy and nervous and full of anticipation? Yeah, it was a good idea.
He straddled the bike and settled himself, then held out his hand to her. “Ready?”
Trembling fingers slid across his palm and he tugged her close. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Good.” And damn, did she feel good pressed against his side. It was going to be the best kind of hell when she was cradling his hips and ass between her thighs. “I’ve got you. Get on behind me.”
She finally settled in after two attempts. Tight muscles. The ride would loosen those and tighten others. She planted her feet, widened her legs to accommodate him comfortably and he’d been right. This was the best kind of hell, a very special kind of hell. Her arousal was strong and his animal instinct fought to get out and take her. He battled the bear back, but it wouldn’t be long and Gus wouldn’t be able to fight the hunger.
He’d need to shift and run. Or… He’d need to fuck.
God… Just the thought of…
“Hold on tight, Bex.
